AutoZone Design System

Built from the ground up, the AutoZone design system gave teams a shared foundation for creating consistent experiences across web, mobile, and in-store touchscreens. Years later, it evolved with Figma variables and design tokens, helping teams scale, adapt to new technologies, and enabled them to bring experiences to market approximately 50% faster while improving consistency across the enterprise.

Building the foundation for enterprise-scale design

To create greater consistency and speed across AutoZone’s digital experiences, we began by auditing the components used throughout the enterprise. This gave us a clear view of what existed, where patterns diverged, and which foundational elements could be standardized and scaled.

We transformed the findings of the audit into a unified design system, defining each component, its behavior, its visual states, and the guidance needed to use it effectively. The goal was not simply to create a library, but to establish a shared language that aligned design and engineering around how digital experiences should be built.

We established a governance model for proposing, evaluating, updating, and adding components, maintaining cohesion across the system while allowing it to evolve with new needs, technologies, and design patterns.

As design tools and team needs evolved, we revisited the system to incorporate new Figma capabilities, including variables and design tokens. This shifted the system from a static component library into a more flexible and scalable foundation for product development. For developers, the system helps them implement interfaces more quickly and consistently across platforms. By providing established patterns and reusable components, it reduces the need to recreate foundational UI from scratch.

The AutoZone design system became more than a collection of components. It established a durable operating model for how teams design, build, and scale digital experiences, creating greater efficiency today while preparing the organization to move faster as new platforms and technologies emerge.
